For some releases, I've opted to simply start fresh, to get rid of all of the cruft of previous installs, although your recommendation to install beforehand could take care of this. I would even suggest using "apt-get purge" for packages you really don't use. Is there any other command that will cleanse even more (specifically, user-level configuration files)?
